La partida de Carlos Iván Degregori es una enorme pérdida para las ciencias sociales peruanas, para el movimiento de derechos humanos y para los sectores democráticos de nuestro país. Antropólogo de profesión, desde su juventud tuvo un firme compromiso con la búsqueda de un país más justo, más digno y en donde se cumpliera el sueño de Jose María Arguedas de “vivir feliz todas las patrias”.
Su trayectoria académica e intelectual y su acción en el mundo de la docencia, la investigación, el periodismo y la militancia política, siempre estuvieron marcados por la particular combinación de un espíritu libre con una gran capacidad para transmitir sus ideas, detrás de las cuales siempre existían sólidos argumentos.
Su profundo vinculo y sus años de trabajo en Ayacucho lo llevaron a mediados de los años ochenta a convertirse en el más importante estudioso de la violencia política y de Sendero Luminoso, y en un referente clave para entender el complejo proceso que vivía el país y el rol que jugó la escuela pública en la construcción del proyecto senderista. A partir de este trabajo Carlos Iván se reveló como uno de los más importantes especialistas de los procesos de construcción de memoria en América Latina y luego en miembro e investigador principal de la Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación.
Carlos Iván Degregori fue un buen amigo de la Asociación SER desde hace muchos años, ayudándonos de forma desinteresada en diversos momentos, a analizar y entender las diversas y muchas veces contradictorias aristas de la realidad nacional y ayacuchana en particular. Y durante este último tiempo, nos concedió el honor de ser columnista de Noticias SER, a pesar de estar ya gravemente enfermo
Por todo ello, y por su aporte invalorable al país, le rendimos este sentido y pequeño homenaje. Así mismo, a través de estas líneas hacemos llegar nuestras condolencias a sus familiares, a todas las personas que lo amaron, a sus compañeros y compañeras del Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, y a quienes a través de su obra y palabra pudieron entender mejor nuestro país.
