¿Una gran ingenuidad?

Casi coincidiendo con la entrega del Premio Nobel de Literatura a Mario Vargas Llosa ha sido publicado “Una gran ingenuidad: El Movimiento Libertad 1987-1989” escrito por José Carlos Requena, libro que cubre un importante vacío sobre el movimiento político que lideró nuestro gran novelista y que tuvo un rol fundamental en el desenlace de la crisis política que el Perú vivió a fines de los años 80.¿Una gran ingenuidad?
Requena analiza la historia y los avatares de “Libertad” desde su inicio como reacción ciudadana al proyecto de estatización de la Banca que el entonces joven presidente Alan García lanzo el 28 de julio de 1987 hasta el lanzamiento de la plancha presidencial del Frente Democrático (FREDEMO) con Vargas Llosa a la cabeza en junio de 1989. En este recorrido el autor pone en evidencia los límites de un movimiento que al ingresar al terreno de la política fue perdiendo su encanto, razón que a la larga, condujo a la derrota electoral de 1990.
El autor considera que “la falla de origen” de Libertad fue la falta de realismo político de Vargas Llosa y quienes lo acompañaron, que entendieron su acción en la política peruana como un “ejercicio racional ajeno a las pasiones y los sinsabores humanos”. ¿Fue ese el problema? ¿O quizá fue la enorme distancia que en aquel momento tenía este sector de la elite intelectual peruana en relación a la ciudadanía de aquellos años, mucho más politizada que la del presente siglo?
Aunque consideramos valiosa la conclusión de Requena, quizás ésta sería distinta, si hubiese abarcado en su estudio el apasionante y complejo proceso electoral de 1990, cuyo inesperado desenlace mostró lo difícil que era en aquel tiempo convencer a los peruanos de las bondades del libre mercado –casi parte del sentido común de nuestros días- y de la importancia de los valores democráticos liberales que aún hoy es una asignatura pendiente de los partidos políticos en el Perú.
